The Frankie bag from Somas.

Back to basics

I’ve been feeling like I’m entering a new style stage recently, one in which I’m paring things back an awful lot and really appreciating the more simple style basics.

This could also be a little bit of wanting a sartorial palette cleanse after all the sequins and glam of party season but I’ve been looking at my wardrobe and really looking to see what basic pieces I’ve been missing.

It’s all well and good to have the latest, fun pieces in your wardrobe but to truly get the wear out of these you must have your basic capsule wardrobe organised.

Of course, a capsule wardrobe looks a little bit different for everyone and while I love the fit and shape of a v-neck t-shirt someone else will prefer a round neck so it’s worth spending some time on getting to know your own style and what suits you best.

Now you certainly don’t need to spend a huge amount of money on your wardrobe essentials but as these are pieces that you’ll be wearing time and time again, it is worth investing your money in these items and getting the best quality for your budget.

Items like jeans, blazers, boots and coats will not need to be replaced very often at all so it’s worth focusing your budget here. You can also pick up a lot of these items in the sale so make a list and keep an eye out on your favourite shop websites or instore.

For t-shirts, tops and vests, I find COS and H&M particularly good and both with different but affordable price points. I adore a striped Breton tee and I invested in a navy and cream one from Sezane a couple of years ago.

Yes it was a little pricey but it still looks as good as new and elevates jeans and jackets every time I wear that particular look.

The capsule wardrobe is also great to bridge the gap between seasons as it’s a wear anywhere at anytime sort of look and just add a cosy cardigan if you need some extra layers.

If a cardie isn’t your thing, then a very chic and simple light knit is the perfect addition to your wardrobe and you’ll not go wrong with an M&S cashmere jumper. A little bit spendy but so worth it and it’s such a treat too.

It goes without saying that jeans are a staple in pretty much everyone's life but I have also been wanting a stylish alternative and have spent ages looking for a great pair of trousers that I can wear casually, for work or even on a night out. I bought a pair of black slim leg trousers in the River Island sale and I’ve already worn them with trainers and with kitten heels going for dinner.

I also spotted a high waist, wide leg navy pair that would look great with t-shirts, knits and classic white shirts.

All these looks need one final touch and that is a chic accessory, so it’s worth investing in a great handbag. I love the brown, soft leather bags from Irish label Somas. They are a great entry price point for a good quality bag and look so, so luxe.

No look is complete without jewellery and you all know my absolute love for beautiful gold jewellery and again we are so spoilt with jewellery designers and independent labels that it’s worth having a look at what’s out there and really building up a few pieces that you can wear every day.
