BreastCheck unit opens on north side

A new BreastCheck screening unit opened in Gurranabraher earlier this week. There are now three BreastCheck screening units in Cork and women will be offered breast screening at one of the three locations in the city, with the HSE saying that the service “will be more accessible to women living on the north side of the city and county”.

The new location is on the grounds of St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital, Baker’s Road, Gurranabraher, Cork, T23 X440 with free parking available.

Speaking about the new location, BreastCheck Programme Manager Suzanne Lynch said: “It is our aim to have as many women as possible choose to come for breast screening. This means addressing as many barriers to screening as we can.

“We know that access can be a barrier and we hope that our new unit on the grounds of St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital will make screening more accessible to women living on the northside of Cork city and county. We are grateful to St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital for hosting us.”

BreastCheck aims to invite women aged 50 to 69 for breast screening every two years. Each invitation letter will include full details about their screening appointment, and the address and/or Eircode of the unit the woman should attend. The two existing screening locations in Cork are the Southern Unit, on Infirmary Road, and on the grounds of St Finbarr’s Hospital, near Block 23, Douglas Road.

Anyone with additional queries, or who needs to change the place, date or time of their screening appointment, can contact BreastCheck Southern Unit. Telephone 021-4649700, Monday to Friday between 8am–5pm; Freephone 1800-454555 from 9am-6pm, Monday to Friday; or email info@breastcheck.ie.

The HSE reminds all women aged 50-69 to check that they are on the BreastCheck register at www.hse.ie/breastcheck.
