Trendsetting

These days it can almost seem like a fashion trend is a dirty word with more and more people ignoring trends and looking more towards developing their own personal style. Nevertheless, we will always have trends and the start of a new season is always a good time to take a look at what we can expect to see coming into the shops.

I like to have a look at the trends for inspiration and to shop my own wardrobe around the trends, but also to see if there’s any little additions, I can make to what I already have as a little refresher.

This season there are a few standout trends and one that everyone can get on board with is elevated basics.

Designers and the high street are taking basics like trench coats, blazers and so on and elevating the details to make them the best versions of themselves or giving little quirky twists to the pieces - see JW Andersons trench with pleating as an example.

This trend also feeds a little bit into '90s nostalgia which has now been around for numerous seasons and is still going strong. This is a wardrobe palette cleanser an a great antidote to the Y2K revival which still makes me shudder.

The ‘90s vibe is very much pared back and look to ‘90s Calvin Klein for inspiration.

Again it features great every day basics, blazers, slip skirts and simple t-shirts and this is the look to channel if you want to update your workwear wardrobe.

I’ve also noticed that I’ve transitioned into wearing trousers a lot more and I now rarely reach for jeans. Occasionally I’ll wear a wide or straight leg pair but for me it’s all about the trouser now and the catwalks are in agreement.

From joggers to wide leg trousers it’s all about comfort combined with easy tailoring. I have a selection of black trousers that I wear constantly and amongst my favourites and most worn are a high waist cigarette leg pair from River Island and a wide leg, oversized pair from H&M. They go with everything and while I pairing them with knitwear now come the spring I'll be wearing with a t-shirt, my leather jacket and some flats.

Speaking of footwear I am also extremely delighted that flat shoes are the major footwear trend for SS24. Ballet flats and Mary Janes are everywhere from pastel colours to luxury embellished styles there’s a flat out there for everyone. I have even been known to wear a bejewelled flat on a night out and let me tell you it is refreshing not to have a night out ruined by foot pain.

However, it’s not all sensible basics for the new season and those who like a bit of sparkle can rejoice as metallics make their way into spring and I for one cannot wait to wear a silver skirt with a white t-shirt and a grey kitten heel. Yes, I do have this outfit on standby for when the weather gets a bit warmer.

Leather is also having a moment this season with leather trench coats and bombers being popular styles. I’m in the market for an oversized biker style but can’t decide on whether I want to go for a long style which is a bit more classic or for a more cropped, dressier style. Keep an eye on the sales now because I have seen some leather jackets on sale, and you can buy now and wear later.
