Student charity to host concert for African hospitals

A charity concert raising crucial funds for struggling African hospitals will take place in Cork city this Sunday.

The Harmonies and Hits concert, organised by UCC student-run charity Surgeon Noonan Society, will feature international award-winning chamber choir Ancór and the Irish Doctors Choir.

The concert will take place at St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Washington Street, Cork city this Sunday at 3.30pm, with all proceeds going directly to underfunded rural hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Directed by Cecilia Madden and Brian MacKay respectively, Ancór and the Irish Doctors Choir will be performing a mixture of classic church hymns and modern hits.

The event is aimed at families, but every age group is welcome and children under 12 go free.

Organisers Surgeon Noonan Society are a charity organised by 4th year medical students in UCC whose goal is to reach €150,000 each year for African hospitals.

The charity was founded in 1978 to commemorate the late Tim Noonan, a UCC Medical School graduate who worked for much of his surgical career across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Shannon Cotter, Collaborations Officer of Surgeon Noonan Society, said: “Our goal is to reach €150,000 each year and we are happy to say we are quite close to the target due to the generosity of the people of Cork and beyond.”

Tickets for Sunday’s concert can be purchased at the door or at bookings.scopetickets.com/event/11961.
