SVP Cork needs volunteers more than ever
Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) South-West are seeking volunteers in the Cork city centre area to help with all aspects of work the charity does in the local community.
This can include helping with data input and with very basic accounts work along with home visitation and meeting families who need them.
Currently, the charity says that there are approximately 272 members in Cork city, but such are the demands for SVP support services that they are seeking to double this figure to continue helping as many people as possible on Leeside.
Member Support Co-ordinator, Ellmarie Spillane, said Covid-19 “decimated” SVP’s volunteer numbers and they have since struggled to return to pre-pandemic levels.
She said: “Unfortunately our need for volunteers in the Cork city area has never been greater and while we are so appreciative of all of the support SVP receives from the public, we would ask anyone who might be in a position to lend a hand to consider doing so, as we urgently people to step forward and be willing to offer just a few hours a week to help us continue this vital work in the local community in the city.
“Our volunteers are the heart of what we do—they bring not just practical support, but kindness, empathy, and hope into people’s homes,” she added.
In terms of requirements, an application form, garda vetting, and references will be essential due to the sensitive and vulnerable aspects of the work required.
Access to private transport is preferable as volunteers may need to travel outside of their own locality for home visits. Full Home visitation training will be provided by SVP for all volunteers.
Once callers make contact with SVP initially, where possible a home visitation is then facilitated by the charity and the volunteers call to homes to offer face to face interaction and support, listening in complete confidentiality to help assess their needs and organise the relevant help and support required.
In 2024 in Cork alone, SVP responded to 9,361 requests for help, distributed 18,660 food hampers and meals, and extended fuel support 5,442 individuals and families. The charity also provided vital aid and resources to 19,674 families, helped 97 families who were at risk of losing their homes, supported 6,885 students across all levels, and provided energy support to 1,397 people.
