April sports award for Tim O’Mahony
Cork’s National Hurling League Division 1A win, a first in 27 years, was acknowledged last week when Tim O’Mahony was presented with the 96FM/C103 GAA Sports Star of the month award for April in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel.
The Newtownshandrum star was a key player throughout the campaign playing every minute and scoring some important scores including a classy goal in the win over Tipperary in the final.
Tim was delighted with the award and said the league was very important for the team. “We took it very seriously; only lost once, ironically to Tipperary, but it was great for building momentum for the championship.”
National titles are hard to come by and it was a special occasion on the day of the final. “Incredible - the support this team is getting is absolutely fantastic and it is really appreciated by us all.”
The defeat to Limerick has been parked and the focus is now on Saturday’s Munster Final. “Well we had little time to dwell on it as we had Waterford a week later; we got the job done and now it’s back up the road where we as we always do give it our best shot.”
County Board Chairman Pat Horgan in congratulating Tim said: “this award is well deserved as he was a model of consistency in very game and of course we wish Tim, Pat and all the team the best of luck in the Munster Final.”
Pat who was accompanied by Vice-Chairman Noel O’Callaghan and Derek Connolly, also thanked the sponsors for their coverage of our games and the continued promotion of these very prestigious awards.
Kieran McGeary of 96FM and Steve Cox of Rochestown Park Hotel also congratulated Tim and extended best wishes to the team for Saturday’s final.
Family, friends and club members from Netownshandrum were in attendance along with his girlfriend Cork camogie captain Meabh Cahalane, herself a national league winning captain a few weeks ago, and a special supporter of Tim, Glen Rovers’ young camogie player Elle May.
Tim is the 4th winner of the year joining Sean Desmond from Watergrasshill for January; in February the award went to UL and Kanturk’s Brian O’Sullivan, while Cork ladies football star Katie Quirke was the March winner in recognition of the team gaining promotion back to Division 1 of the national league at the first attempt.
Now in its 22nd year, the awards continue to honour the very best in Cork GAA embracing all codes, camogie, ladies football and handball as we look forward to an exciting and action packed few months ahead.
