Cork Harbour gets new trad fest!
The picturesque town of Cobh will burst into song later this month as it host the inaugaural Cobh Trad Fest.
Running from 25-27 July, the brand new festival promises a lively weekend full to the brim with Irish traditional music, hands-on workshops, market stalls, a farmers market, and even a late-night céilí!
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Cobh’s waterfront and the town’s many great venues, the festival promises an unforgettable mix of headline concerts, open-air performances, intimate pub sessions, family-friendly events, and spontaneous street music, welcoming everyone from seasoned trad musicians to curious newcomers.
“We’re proud to bring people together to experience the magic of traditional music in a town as special as Cobh. There’s nothing quite like the sound of a fiddle or accordion echoing through the streets and over the harbour,” said Terry Murphy, festival spokesperson.
The headlining acts are Ger Wolfe on the Friday night with support from Geantraí and Luasca; and No Name Trio supported by The Rolling Wave on Saturday night. Both headliners will perform at the Commodore Hotel which will also serve as the festival headquarters where visitors can purchase festival merchandise and pick up flyers and maps throughout the weekend.
Other performers include Sin Saol, Spideog, Youghall Comhaltas, Glúin Nua, Cobh Trad, Oileann, High Chapperal Crew, Douglas Comhaltas, Piper's Chair, Molgoggers, Diarmaid & Vince, and Seisiúna. Aside from all of the scheduled gigs, festival goers can expect street music and spontaneous sessions throughout the town at any time of day.
The festival will also include a special screening of the acclaimed documentary ‘The Job of Songs’, a powerful film that delves into the spirit, soul, and stories of Irish traditional music.
On Saturday morning, six hands-on workshops will be led by some of Ireland’s finest musicians: flute and tin whistle – Joanne Quirke; bodhrán – Karl Nesbitt; fiddle – Abby Ní Loingsigh; concertina and accordion – Clíona Halley; banjo and mandolin – Darragh Carey-Kennedy; and accompaniment (guitar, bouzouki, keyboard) – Stephen O'Dea. Workshops run from 9.30am to 2.40pm and culminate in a public performance by tutors and participants.
The late-night céilí will take place at High Chap on Saturday night from 9.30pm ‘til late, promising a lively evening of traditional group dancing, music, and fun. No experience necessary, just bring your dancing shoes!
Cobh Trad Fest is a new community-led festival supported by Cork County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Cobh Comhaltas, and Cobh Trad.
