50 years and counting

A local college GAA club is celebrating half a century of sporting spirit this year.

MTU’s Student GAA Club 50th anniversary will be commemorated with a special event on Monday 15 September at MTU’s Bishopstown Campus.

The evening will kick off with food and refreshments at 6.30pm, offering current students, alumni, staff, and friends of the club a chance to reconnect and reminisce. This will be followed by a panel discussion at 7pm, featuring a selection of former MTU players and club members, who will share their memories and reflections on how the GAA club has shaped campus life and sporting culture over the decades.

Speaking ahead of the event, MTU GAA Officer, Kevin O Callaghan, said: “This celebration is about honouring everyone who has contributed to the MTU GAA Club over the past 50 years, from players and coaches to supporters and volunteers. The club has played a huge role in shaping the student experience, and we look forward to marking this special anniversary with the wider MTU community.”

Founded in 1975 as part of the then Cork Regional Technical College (RTC), the club has grown into a cornerstone of student life through its time as Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and now MTU. Over the years, the club has been a breeding ground for talent and leadership, producing numerous intercounty players and All Ireland medal winners while also fostering a deep sense of identity and pride among its members.
