Ireland gears up to shape Europe ahead of EU presidency

As Ireland prepares for its eighth Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026, the country has a unique chance to influence Europe’s response to some of the biggest challenges of our time.

That was discussed last week as European Movement Ireland welcomed Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, to a roundtable talk in Dublin.

The event focused on Irish-EU relations, the work of the European Commission, and priorities for Ireland’s upcoming EU Presidency.

Commissioner McGrath oversees the European Democracy Shield, protecting electoral integrity, strengthening the rule of law, safeguarding media freedom, supporting civil society, and upholding the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Speaking at the event, he said: “In this time of profound geopolitical instability, the European Commission’s mission remains clear: to find common solutions to pressing challenges and to build a stronger, more resilient Europe for the future.

“Thanks to the vital work of European Movement Ireland in bridging the gap between Europe and its citizens, this mission is made all the more achievable.”

Noelle O’Connell, CEO of European Movement Ireland, added: “It was an honour to host Commissioner McGrath and hear his update.

“Europe faces extraordinary challenges, from Russia’s aggression in Ukraine to Israel’s military assault in Palestine, shifting EU-US relations, and the drive to strengthen global competitiveness.

“Ireland now has a great opportunity to help shape Europe’s response to these unprecedented challenges.”

The discussion underlined the importance of citizen engagement, clear communication, and informed debate as Ireland steps into its leadership role.
