Senior Support: Homesharing to tackle Cork’s social issues?

An initiative connecting younger people in need of affordable accommodation with older home owners in need of support could be key to solving some of Cork’s most pressing social issues.

In today’s Ireland, affordable and comfortable accommodation is incredibly hard to find, especially in cities like Cork with a large student and young professional population.

It’s no secret that many students at UCC and MTU are struggling with a severe shortage of affordable accommodation, with some forced to endure lengthy commutes or pay extortionate rents that can reach up to €14,000 a year. This housing stress affects not only students but also other younger people trying to establish themselves in Cork.

At the other end of the age spectrum, social isolation among older adults is an increasing concern. Research from Social Justice Ireland shows that nearly 4% of the Irish population often feels lonely, with many more experiencing it occasionally. Loneliness is not just an emotional struggle but also poses serious health risks, including increased chances of cardiovascular disease and dementia, as highlighted by studies from the University of Limerick.

Homesharing, facilitated by The HomeShare, addresses both these issues by connecting younger sharers who need affordable accommodation with older householders who would benefit from companionship and some weekly support in their homes. This mutual arrangement helps younger people find stable housing while reducing loneliness and fostering security for older adults.

Carefully matched and supported by professionals, homesharing is designed to be a straightforward yet powerful way to build community, support independence, and improve wellbeing for all involved.
