Look from River Island, Opera Lane.

That's versatility with a capital V!

Love them or loathe them, there is no denying that not only are we coming into peak sequin season. However, this sparkly fabric has also made its way into our everyday wardrobes.

The great thing about sequins is that the style rarely changes but the way you style them will determine if they look dated or modern. They are dressy wardrobe staples that you won’t need to update all that often, so you won’t need to fork out for new pieces, and they are also something you can easily shop for second hand as they are pretty hard wearing and durable.

I’m a sucker for a classic silver or gold sequin but there are so many different colour options out there from a classic, festive red to a more expensive looking gun mental colour. You can dress the sequin up or down and therein lies the power of their versatility.

The sequin cropped jacket has been taking the fashion world by storm the last few seasons, and I’m particularly taken with a gorgeous version from River Island with bow tie detail. You can style it with a slip skirt and boots, jeans and some heels or a sequin skirt for varying degrees of dressiness.

Plus, you can also give it a styling twist and wear the bow tie detail to the back to give it more of a dressy top feel to the look. If you want to get the most of the sequins you already have, then it is so easy to add them to your daytime wardrobe. Just focus on the juxtaposition of casual and dressy.

One of my favourite ways to style sequins for day wear is to pair a sequin skirt with a sweatshirt and trainers and then place a fabulous coat over the top. All the other elements of the look are so casual that you will feel totally at ease walking around mid-day with a shiny sequin skirt. I also love a sequin skirt styled with a really lovely, loose knitwear which looks super expensive and again could be styled with boots or with a heel to make it more of a nighttime look.

Now that is versatility with a capital V. If you want to make the sequins more casual, I would also tone down the accessories and keep them to a minimum. This is probably the only time I will suggest doing such a thing.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a sequin dress and it’s something I would recommend for anyone’s wardrobe. I love a simple 1960s style swing dress silhouette that’s easy to wear and looks fab with barely there black tights and a block heel. Keep it simple with a slicked back low bun and a drop earring. Timeless and classic, well as classic as you can be dressed like a disco ball.

For a more modern take go for big, bold disc like sequins which is a nod to vintage Paco Rabanne. If you don’t fancy the designer price tag, then ASOS are the ones to go to for this sort of style. If you’re a bit hesitant to dip your toe into the sparkling sequin pool, then stick to something simple like a sequin top and black sequins are always a good entry point into this style. Be brave and you’ll be dance floor ready in no time at all!
