Discover some new colour combinations this spring
I’m currently in the process of possibly one of my most disliked jobs. That is the spring clean of the wardrobe and trying to pack away the heavier pieces till next winter.
You don’t want to jump the gun and have no warm pieces left in the wardrobe only for a cold snap to make an appearance but equally you need to make space to add in your lighter spring summer bits.
Even though I find the whole process time consuming and a bit stressful, I do find taking it in sections and doing it over a couple of days the best way to tackle it.
It also is a good opportunity to properly see what you have in your wardrobe and to find pieces that were forgotten about and that you can get excited about styling again.
I also have been taking the wardrobe clear out as an opportunity to discover new colour combinations and I do feel like I’ve got lots of new outfits and I haven’t even bought anything.
I don’t feel ready to let go of some of my black pieces in my wardrobe but at the same time they can feel a little bit heavy at this time of year especially on those sunny days.
I’m looking at what colours I can mix with black to freshen up these pieces and one colour that’s perfect for spring is baby or powder blue. I’ve been wearing an oversized light blue shirt with my M&S black barrell leg jeans and some flat pumps, and it’s become one of my go-to throw on spring looks that is very easy to put together but still looks styled.
If black is not your thing, then I’m also having a similar colour love affair with chocolate brown and pastel pink. If like me, you heavily invested in brown last year and have a lot of it in your wardrobe, then you will definitely want to find ways of being able to wear it into the new season and by adding a lighter colour is a great way to do this. It’s effortlessly chic and expensive looking and the contrast gives great depth to the brown. If pink isn’t your thing, then just substitute in some blue which is quite simply the colour combination we didn’t know we needed in our lives.
I also want to start wearing more of my white pieces and sometimes it can feel a bit strange wearing white when it’s not super sunny but just like the darker colours, it’s all about what you pair it with and I am loving a white and olive green colour combination.
It gives balance to the white and is the perfect base for gold accessories and for adding prints like leopard and a brown and cream polka dot. The green also works so well with navy if you aren’t quite sure about white and I have my eye on a navy and green stripe jacket that I think I would get so much wear out of.
Also don’t be afraid of going full on with your colour and instead of mixing with a neutral pair, some bold colours together. This summer is all about bright bold colours so see what you have in your wardrobe and what can be mixed together.
I love a red and pink colour clash, and this is easily achieved by pair a simple red column dress with a pink scarf tied around the waist or I’ve got a pair of red jeans that I’m going to style with a pink shirt. Very easy to style but makes a big impact.
