Major epilepsy event coming to Cork this month
Ireland’s largest annual event for people living with epilepsy will take place in Cork this month.
On 19 September, national charity Epilepsy Ireland is inviting the epilepsy community across Cork and beyond to its National Conference at the International Hotel, Cork.
The conference brings together people with epilepsy and their families to hear about the latest clinical and research developments in Ireland.
This year’s event marks the first time since 2019 that the conference has been hosted in Cork, with the charity confirming “a strong local flavour” reflected throughout the programme.
Cork-born Professor Norman Delanty, an internationally recognised leader in epilepsy treatment and care, will return to his home county for the conference to discuss what epilepsy care in Ireland could look like in 2040. Attendees will also hear about a UCC-led research project, co-funded by Epilepsy Ireland, that is exploring seizure prediction.
The conference will also feature contributions from members of the local epilepsy community. Cork TD Eoghan Kenny and Óglaigh na hÉireann Sergeant Bernie Hart will share their experiences of epilepsy from both lived and parental perspectives.
With the conference date fast approaching and more than 5,000 people living with epilepsy across Cork, Epilepsy Ireland is encouraging members of both the epilepsy community and the wider public to attend.
Long-serving local community resource officer, Niamh Jones said: “The conference is always one of the highlights of our annual calendar at Epilepsy Ireland, and as a local community resource officer and proud Cork woman, I'm delighted that it has returned to Cork this year.”
Ms Jones noted that the wide range of speakers this year will provide valuable insights and perspectives.
She continued: “One of the best things about the conference for me is the sense of community. It gives people with epilepsy and their families the opportunity to meet others, share experiences and learn from one another.”
Tickets for the conference are now available for €40 and include a two-course meal along with refreshments throughout the day.
