Charity to give away car in fundraising drive

SVP Southwest have launched their 2026 car draw fundraising campaign, which will see them giving away a brand-new Hyundai Tucson to one lucky entry.

The drive comes at a time when the charity is appealing for much-needed funds, as demand for their assistance sits at an all-time high.

The charity helps both individuals and families in need with ordinary essentials like food, electricity, gas, and education-related costs. Last year alone, the southwestern branch received over 18,600 requests across Cork and Kerry, with the charity spending €5.8 million on direct assistance to households.

President of the Southwest branch of SVP, Mary Frances Behan said the figures highlight the importance of local initiatives such as the car draw.

“Behind every request for support is a person, a family, a child or an older person who is facing real challenges and difficult choices," said Ms Behan.

“The generosity of the public through initiatives such as the Car Draw allows our members and volunteers to respond quickly and compassionately when help is needed most,” she added.

The charity's 1,100 members responded to 8,000 requests in 2025, a figure that shows a 20% increase on the previous year's distribution of food hampers and vouchers.

Funds raised from the draw will go to a number of local initiatives, including Cork's Knockadoon Holiday camp, which provides a residential summer holiday experience each year for 80 children aged between seven and 12.

Last year’s Car draw saw over €250,000 raised, with a man from Carrigaline, Co Cork, winning a Ford Focus. As well as the car, second prize is a €2,000 holiday voucher, third a €1,500 cash prize, while fourth will enjoy a bed and breakfast dinner for two at Fota Island Hotel & Spa.

The campaign was launched by hotelier, TV personality and SVP Car Draw Campaign champion, Francis Brennan.

He said one thing he admired about the charity is how deeply rooted its members are in their communities.

“Every ticket purchased helps support people locally who may be going through an exceptionally difficult time,” he said.

Mr Brennan continued: “Of course, there is also the excitement of winning a fantastic new car or one of the other wonderful prizes, but the real prize is knowing that your support is helping families across Cork and Kerry access the assistance they need.”
