Murphy picks up August award

By Finbarr McCarthy

Since the introduction of the group format of the County Senior Hurling Championships, Erin’s Own have always emerged from whatever group they were drawn and this year was no exception, indeed they even went one step further and secured the coveted semi-final spot on offer.

Key to all that has been several experienced players among them Kieran Murphy and in recognition of his outstanding contribution to their run, he was presented with the 96FM/C103 GAA Sports Star award for August in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel.

Kieran was delighted to be honoured: “I thought my days for getting awards was over but it’s a great honour and while it’s a team game, I am accepting this on behalf of a great bunch of players that have given so much to Erin’s Own.”

He may have two county medals but the desire for another is as strong as ever. “It’s the same with us all, and we are really looking forward to the semi-final against Blackrock; it will be tough but they all are at this stage of the championship.”

County Board Chairman Marc Sheehan said: “It is testimony to Kieran’s commitment to his club that he is been rightly honoured here today and I congratulate him and wish Erin’s Own the very best in the rest of the championship.”

Marc also thanked 96FM/C103 and the Rochestown Park Hotel for their continued promotion of these very prestigious awards and also for their support for all aspects of our games.

Tom Tobin of Rochestown Park Hotel and Isabel Keane of 96FM also congratulated Kieran on his award and wished him success for the upcoming games.

Kieran was accompanied by his family including brother Eoin also a key member for the team, Manager Martin Bowen, Chairman Tom Aherne while also in attendance were Jamie Murphy, County Board Officers Eoin O’Connor and Pat Horgan.

Kieran now joins the previous monthly award winners in the race for the overall award.

The 2022 banquet will now take place on 10 February in the Rochestown Park Hotel where GAA President Larry McCarthy will be the guest of honour.
