Cork Airport to get ‘momentous’ €200m investment
An ambitious €200 million capital investment plan for Cork Airport has been launched with an aim to expand to more than 5 million passengers per year.
Launched by An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD, the Cork Airport Capital Development Plan outlines the most significant investment plan for Cork Airport in nearly 25 years.
The plan’s key aspects include the construction of a new mezzanine floor with a state-of-the-art passenger security screening area, a new and larger duty-free shop, and a new and larger executive lounge.
Other key aspects include the construction of additional boarding gates, the construction of a new solar farm, and the extension of the existing car parks.
The plan will also see the demolition of the old terminal and old control tower allowing the construction of a new pier with more boarding gates and aircraft parking stands.
Work is set to start on the new mezzanine floor in the coming months, with the construction of a new 1.7Mw solar farm already in the statutory planning process.
Launching the plan, An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD, described it as a “momentous day” for Ireland’s second largest airport.
“Cork Airport has become a critical component of our national transport infrastructure and as Ireland’s fastest growing airport, its continued development is paramount. I have no doubt that the benefits of this plan will only bring further growth to what is already a thriving airport,” he said.
Also speaking at the launch was Niall MacCarthy, Managing Director, Cork Airport, who said Cork Airport has a stress-free “magic formula” for passenger satisfaction and future success.
He said: “We have a unique selling point of friendly, easy, no-stress travel with short walking distances from car parks to gate.
“For that reason, and as we continue to grow, we are planning proactively now for the next six to ten years.
“This period will see our passenger levels grow up to and beyond 5 million passengers per annum.”
Mr MacCarthy added: “What we have announced today is a significant capital infrastructure plan not just for Cork Airport but for the entire south of Ireland region and our team will be proud to lead its delivery.”
Cork Chamber also warmly welcome the launch the capital development plan with Chamber President Rob Horgan highlighting the vital role Cork Airport plays as a key enabler of economic growth, regional connectivity, and international access.
“As a gateway to the south of Ireland, the airport is a critical asset for attracting and retaining investment, supporting tourism, and enhancing the region’s overall competitiveness on the global stage,” he said.
