County Mayor’s Diary Cllr Joe Carroll

We’ve been truly blessed with a recent spell of glorious weather across Cork county. From bustling villages to coastal walks, our communities have been out enjoying the best of what our beautiful county has to offer.

And with the summer months fast approaching, thoughts naturally turn to school holidays, beach days, and family outings. As mayor, I’m proud to say Cork County Council is working hard to ensure this season is not just fun-filled, but also safe, supportive, and inspiring, especially for our young people. Safety always comes first, and that’s why I was heartened to witness more than 700 secondary students attend our recent Road Safety Promotion Day at Cork Racecourse in Mallow.

Through powerful real-life stories and hands-on workshops delivered by our fire service, ambulance service, gardaí, and road safety advocates, students heard directly about the dangers of distraction, speeding, and the fragility of life on the road. These lessons will stay with them and hopefully save lives.

Of course, sunny days also mean trips to the beach, and we’re very proud that Cork has once again received national recognition with 11 Blue Flag and 14 Green Coast awards for our outstanding beaches. These awards celebrate not only the cleanliness and natural beauty of our coastlines but also the commitment of our council, volunteers, and local communities to maintain them. So, whether you’re heading to Garretstown, Inchydoney or Ardnahinch, you’re in for a safe day out.

At the younger end of the age spectrum, we’re delighted to welcome the newest generation of school-goers with the return of the much-loved My Little Library Book Bag initiative. Each child starting school this September can collect a free book bag from their local library, filled with stories that build confidence, promote friendships, and spark imagination. It’s a joyful way to start their school journey and one that we hope encourages a lifelong love of reading. And finally, I’m particularly excited about Cruinniú na nÓg, Ireland’s National Day of Creativity for young people, taking place on 7 June. More than 30 events will be hosted across county Cork, many of them born from the dreams and ideas of children themselves through the My Creative Wish initiative.

From songwriting in Burnfort to DJing in Mallow, our young people are being given the tools, mentors, and encouragement to express themselves and shine. So as we soak up the sunshine, let’s also celebrate a season of safety, education, and creativity. Our youth are the heartbeat of county Cork, and we are committed to helping them grow, learn, and thrive in every way possible.
