Time to commit to your summer wardrobe!
Have you done the big seasonal wardrobe swap over yet or are you clinging on to spring afraid to fully commit to your summer style?
I’m sort of in both camps at the moment and when I see some rain in the forecast, I tend to feel like I need to dress a bit more spring-like.
However I soon regret my decision when I realise it’s quite humid and I’m sitting in work with a sweaty sheen that I’m trying to pass off as a glow.
There’s nothing worse than getting to work and realising that you have in fact dressed incorrectly and yes, I am aware this is very much a first world problem!
I’m now going to piece together my summer wardrobe and my capsule collection for this season is quite a compact one.
While I adore all the colour and print that comes with summer dressing, I don’t tend to buy too much newness at this time of year.
I’ve been that person that has bought all the summer dresses and bits and pieces and then just not had the good weather opportunities to wear them and so each summer all my pieces emerge from storage looking pristine.
There are a few staples that I always fall back on and if you have these in your wardrobe you’ll always be able to put together a great summer look.
Firstly, and I don’t know when this started happening, but I have become a complete oversized shirt wearer. I would never in a month of Sundays bought or worn a shirt but gradually they have really grown on me to the point where most of my outfits consist of some sort of shirt.
I’ve been wearing on repeat a striped blue and white loose fitting shirt from H&M whether it be casually or for work wear and it really smartens up denim while also making an outfit feel very put together and workwear appropriate.
An oversized shirt is also seriously comfortable and has a little bit of a laid-back charm to it. I love to accessorise with gold jewellery.
A linen shirt also works marvellously well with another item I’m loving this season and that’s a tailored pair of shirts. Again this is an item that a few years ago I would not have even entertained adding to my wardrobe but now it’s one of my favourite pieces to style.
Tailored shorts and a linen shirt are such a chic combination especially in neutral ones and you can use animal print accessories to create an interesting focal point. Perfect for workwear, day wear or even as a luxe travel outfit it really is a look that you’ll get endless wear out of in the summer.
People do seem to have an issue with shorts but go for mid length styles to add comfort. I’m certainly not going to add hot pants to my summer sartorial repertoire.
Summer and a great accessory also go hand in hand and if you don’t already own one then you need to b get yourself a straw bag immediately. Of course, you can splurge and go with an iconic Loewe designer woven bag but really there’s no need when there are absolutely countless options out there and for much more pocket friendly budgets. H&M do a lovely straw shopper bag in red so you’re also adding a pop of colour.
I have a selection that my mother has brought home from sun holidays over the years from cross body woven ones to more robust straw baskets. It’s the ultimate summer bag and makes me feel like I’m swanning around the south of France.
