The Julie dress from Ferifolk.

Add some colour this summer

The summer season is a great time to add some colour into your wardrobe.

Whether that be with lots of colourful print, standout block colours or a little nod to colour with some well-chosen accessories. When it comes to colour, I don’t like to follow trends but instead I go for colours I love and I’m drawn to and I know will work well together and with existing pieces in my wardrobe.

I love a really great print but I’ve been quite sensible in recent times and on a number of occasions instead of going for the print option, I’ve opted instead for the block colour as I feel like I’ll get more wear out of it and be able to style it up in a lot of different ways, whereas I feel like with print I can sometimes get a bit bored with it and don’t reach for it as often.

The beauty of high summer pieces though is when you pull them out for the following year they can feel like opening up a new wardrobe.

There are a few colours I noticed are very popular this year and on the more neutral side of things a lot of people seem to be styling all black and all white outfits. This is a really chic way to style summer outfits and the key to elevating these looks is to really focus on the accessories.

Brown, tan leather, woven materials and gold all look super expensive when styled against the neural backdrop of black or white.

I love wearing a black dress in the summer, just keep the material loose and flowy while a pair of white barrel leg jeans with a white vest and red accessories also looks super chic and Parisian.

Both these colours provide a great base to experiment with colourful accessories so why not wrap a colourful scarf around your waist as an interesting way to introduce a colour to the look?

If you prefer something a little softer then off white and the big hit of the season butter yellow are still super popular. Butter yellow is extremely easy to wear and looks great paired with white, brown or tan accessories or for something a little bit different try styling it with burnt orange or icy baby blues.

There are also lot of gorgeous bright colours that are really easy to style and to add into your summer wardrobe repertoire. Particular favourites of mine are deep shade of orange/red and a fresh sky blue.

I have dresses in both of these shades and they never fail me when I need to stand out and make an impression. The sunset red is an absolute showstopper colour and I have a very loose, flowy full length silky dress in this colour that I picked up in H&M as part of their design collection.

It’s simple in design but that’s all you need because the colour does all the work. It’s also a shade that works so well on all sorts of colouring. The sky-blue dress was a more recent purchase from Irish brand Ferifolk and it’s just such a fresh and interesting colour to style. For my complexion I like to warm it up a bit with gold accessories, but you could easily style it with silver or again a rich orange colour would look great against this hue.

If you prefer to break up the colour, then style it with some denim for a relaxed look.

It also is a shade that can easily be style through to autumn and winter.
