Get rid of hazardous waste for free in city
If your shed is full of leftover paint or chemicals, or your kitchen cupboards hide old cleaning products, Cork City Council has the solution.
A free household hazardous waste collection day takes place this Saturday 30 August, from 8.30am-12.30pm at Tramore Valley Park.
Residents can safely dispose of leftover paints (up to 10 cans per person), cleaning chemicals, bleach, aerosols, garden pesticides, automotive fluids, and more. Entry is free, but you must register online to secure your spot. Throwing hazardous items in the bin or down the drain is dangerous. These products can pollute soil and water, harm wildlife, and even cause fires in waste facilities. This collection offers a safe, legal, and environmentally friendly way to dispose of them.
What to bring:
Household chemicals: bleach, disinfectants, oven and toilet cleaners
Personal care items: nail polish, nail polish remover, aerosols
Garden chemicals: pesticides, herbicides
Paints and paint-related products: brushes, rollers
Solvents: varnishes, thinners, glues, resins
Automotive products: used motor oil, petrol, diesel, antifreeze.
Noel Murtagh, Director of Services, Local Area Development & Operations for Cork City Council said: “Proper disposal of household hazardous waste is crucial to protecting Cork’s natural environment.
“If these hazardous waste items end up in general waste bins, they can cause serious pollution, additionally health and safety issues.”
He added: “This event offers a convenient and free way for residents to safely get rid of harmful materials, helping us keep our communities and ecosystems clean and healthy. We urge everyone in Cork city to participate and make a positive impact.”
Carol Sweetnam from the Regional Waste Management Planning Offices added: “Mishandling hazardous waste can be dangerous. This collection makes it easy for householders to do the right thing. For registration and a full list of accepted items, visit mywaste.ie.”
