Wearable art? Colour us interested
When it’s dull and dreary outside and you think the rain will never stop, the absolute best thing you can do is add a little bit of colour to your wardrobe and embrace dopamine dressing.
We all think of wearing bright colours in the summer, but you can really improve your mood by busting out the colourful garments in winter time too.
My favourite way to do this is by popping on a colourful knit, you stay warm and cosy while also embracing colour and even some print. I bought a colourful red and pink knit bomber last year and every time I pop it on it brings me so much joy. I like to style it with leopard print jeans to really make an impact.
You don’t even need to go that full on, simply style up some denim with a block colour bright knit and I guarantee you’ll feel like singing in the rain…or maybe that’s a step too far!
There are so many fabulous knits out there and I’m seeing a lot of Hayley Menzies inspired pieces on the high street but with a more pocket friendly price tag. River Island has some really lovely pieces including some really fun knitwear from their RI X Year Zero London collaboration (pictured). It’s an art meets fashion takeover from the family led atelier famous for bold customisation and unique hand painted work. Wearable art? Yes please.
Knitwear can be a staple in your wardrobe that will last you a lifetime if you just take care with your pieces and here are some tips for caring for your cosy knits.
When it comes to knitwear the less you do with them the better. Most people are over washing their knitwear and a lot of knits can get away with just being spot cleaned on areas.
If you get a nice breezy, dry day there’s no harm in hanging your knitwear on the line to give them a refresh. I like to give my knitwear a final wash of the season when I know I’ll be packing them away till next year. I also, if at all possible, avoid putting them in the washing machine. You think they’ll be fine, but you are playing Russian roulette with your precious pieces.
You follow the instructions and still the cardie comes out in a miniscule baby size. We have all been there. I know it’s a pain but even set aside a little bit of time to do some knitwear handwashing. It’s worth it in the end.
It obviously goes without saying that the dryer is the mortal enemy of knitwear so I dry my knits flat on a clothes horse. Avoid strenuous wringing of the garment just gently squeeze.
I absolutely hate when my favourite jumper bobbles, but this unfortunately is inevitable. However if you invest in one item this year it’s a debobbler. They usually cost around €30-€40 and when used with care will have your most worn, loved pieces looking as good as new.
Storage is also important so always fold when storing in your wardrobe so your knitwear will always keep its shape. Knitwear can get a bad reputation for being difficult to care for but, really, it’s so easy to look after and can be a real hardworking wardrobe staple.
