A look from Somas.

Nostalgia is at an all-time high

I feel like I’m the only person who hasn’t watched ‘Love Story’ about Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and John F Kennedy Jnr.

However I have long admired her style with her being an absolute icon of ‘90s fashion. I would like to say back in the ‘90s I emulated her classic and clean cut aesthetic but unfortunately teenage me was all about neon hipster flares and stacked Buffalo boots but I like to think if I had my time over I’d be a mini CBK. Clean lines, Calvin Klein and straight leg jeans to name but a few staple looks in her wardrobe that are now a standard part of modern dressing.

Nostalgia is at an all-time high and while I can’t get on board with bringing anything from the Y2K back, I am happy to explore a few trends from the ‘90s and adding them to my wardrobe. In fact, a lot of the trends popular at this time have never really gone away. We’re coming into the summer and of course denim cutoff shorts are always going to be a wardrobe staple in the warmer months.

Cutoffs had their heyday in the ‘90s styled with white shirts and cowboy boots and that look is still popular today. However, look to designers such as Isabel Marant if you want to see how you can take the denim cutoff and elevate it to a whole other level.

Pair with a striped shirt, white t-shirt and maybe a relaxed jacket over the top or go for a more bohemian feel and wear with beautiful summer blouses. This is also the perfect look if you’re going to any concerts or gigs this summer and want an outfit to take you from day to night and bring the comfort levels.

On the subject of denim, we are also seeing a renewed interest in embellished denim which brings Britney, Beyonce and all the ‘90s pop girlies to mind but modern embellished denim has gotten a glow up.

Look to Irish brands such as Somas and Joco to see how they are making embellished denim look good again. Subtle embellishments and studs are how we’re wearing the trend now and it looks amazing paired with shirts, blazers and bomber jackets.

The duster coat, vintage kimono is also making a return and I for one am very happy about this as it’s a look I have always loved and I have a few kimonos stored away that I will be taking out and wearing.

I love to pair a vintage kimono with a pair of denim shorts and a leather sandal and it’s really such a lovely summer look. I also think an embellished or vividly patterned duster coat makes for a gorgeous dinner outfit just worn simply with jeans, a silky vest and a pair of heels.

You can layer on the jewellery, and it makes for a very grown up, luxe boho look. It’s also a fabulous cover up if you have any spring/summer weddings coming up and they are light enough to be worn all day.

You won’t want to take it off as it is the absolute star of the show. If you want to go full on glam then pop a faux fur collar or scarf over the top while it’s still a bit chilly.

What I really want to know is when are the mood rings coming back?!
