Burgundy co-ord from H&M.

Will I ever wear it again?

There is nothing more humbling than going through clothes you’ve had stored away for a while, having a try on session and realising things are a bit tighter than you remember.

Welcome to my world last week as I went through boxes of clothes to prep the summer wardrobe changeover. While yes, it is disheartening when you thought you had a lot more clothing options available to you but also it did force me to once and for all really properly look at these items and decide if I would ever wear them again.

We all have those items that year after year never make it out of the storage box and for one reason or another you just can’t part with them. They could hold sentimental value which I think is fine to a point, but you don’t want a wardrobe full of items that you say are sentimental and then have nothing to wear. Add to that, the items that no longer fit whether that be too big or small and pieces you think could come back in fashion, there is so much of our clothing remaining unworn.

I’m finally biting the bullet and getting rid of these items which in my heart I know I won’t wear again as my style has evolved and when am I ever going to wear leopard print hotpants again (to be fair I can’t really recall when I ever wore these).

I’m placing comfort as a priority now and I don’t want to feel squeezed into something or feel like I’m fidgeting when I’m wearing a certain piece and let's not even start on shoes. The number of times recently I’ve tried on some heels with an outfit only to reach for a pair of flats at the last minute. I just can’t do it to myself. I am officially a fashion lightweight now and I’m ok with that. Give me a beautiful pair of bejewelled flats any day over a pair of heels.

The perils of having a wardrobe with items you haven’t tried on for ages or that you know doesn’t work for you anymore always shows itself when you’re unprepared and panic looking for something to wear.

Case in point was me on Friday night when I decided to choose what to wear an hour before I left the house. A wardrobe full of items but I realised I no longer know what to wear for nights out and so many pieces just didn’t look good on me anymore.

Cue a room strewn with clothes and one very stressed person leaving the house. It was lucky for me that in my wisdom I did have one or two fall back pieces and I encourage everyone to have these options available to you.

I was trying to think of something different to wear but in the end, what worked for me was a co-ord. A co-ord is always my go-to look and I have found a few that I know I feel good in, suit me and I can easily dress up for a night out. The one in question was a silky shirt and trousers in a rich burgundy that’s quite loose and flowy and I love it so much I have it in three colours.

I got this in H&M a while back and they bring out different colours every so often. This of course won’t be everyone’s wardrobe go-to but take the time to find out what is and you'll lessen these stressful ‘I’ve got nothing to wear moments’ and if you find that piece, then buy it in all the colours you like!
