Cork teen dies in tragic accident in Greece

A 17 year old boy from Cork has died on the Greek island of Kimolos, according to reporting in Greece.

The boy, who has been identified as Alex McKee, was a student of Terence McSwiney Community College in Hollyhill, where he was due to begin his Leaving Certificate year in September.

Alex was visiting relatives in Greece with his mother – who is Greek – and his sister.

It is understood that the cause of death is currently thought to have been electrocution, caused by faulty wiring in the rental accommodation in which he and his family were staying.

His body has been removed from the island to the city of Piraeus, a suburb of Athens, where an autopsy will be performed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said that it is aware of the incident and that it is providing consular assistance, but that it cannot comment on individual cases.

In a message sent to parents by the school, Alex was described as a “much loved member of our school community”.

The school opened on Monday 11 August for those wishing to pay their respects.

A promising young scientist, Alex won the Ombudsman for Children’s Office Children’s Rights Award at the 2026 Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibit earlier this year, for their project Bumblebee.

Along with two of his fellow students, Alex helped create a communication tool designed to support non-verbal children and adults living with dementia.
