Autumn repair: time to reset, restore, and rebuild
There’s something about September that always feels like a reset. The holidays are winding down, routines are returning and, after a summer of sun, travel, SPF, heat, and perhaps a few late nights, autumn is the perfect time to focus on repair.
For me, that means looking at both what I’m putting on my skin and how I’m supporting my body from within. Nothing overly complicated just good products, consistency and getting back to basics.
Back to the barrier
Post-summer skin can be surprisingly temperamental. UV exposure, heat, air conditioning, travel, and increased cleansing can leave it feeling dry, tight, sensitised, or simply not quite itself. Before throwing every active ingredient you own at it, start with the foundations: cleansing and barrier repair.
Korean skincare brand Genosys has recently introduced its Cerabarrier Biome Gel Cleanser (€36/200ml), a gel-to-foam formula containing five skin-identical ceramides alongside prebiotics and probiotics. The emphasis here isn’t simply on getting the skin clean. It’s about cleansing while supporting the skin barrier and microbiome – particularly useful if your complexion is feeling dry or compromised after summer.
At night, I’m a fan of a proper double cleanse when wearing makeup and SPF. Start with Genosys Skin Defender Lip & Eye Makeup Remover, followed by the Cerabarrier Biome Gel Cleanser massaged onto damp skin. In the morning, a single gentle cleanse is plenty.
Bring in the omegas
This is also the time of year when I start thinking about replenishing what summer may have depleted. Yon-Ka Paris Serum Omega is part of the brand’s next-generation Intensive range and has been created specifically with barrier repair in mind.
Omegas are essential fatty acids that play an important role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier, helping with hydration, comfort, and resilience. Serum Omega contains omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids in an oil-in-serum formula designed to replenish the skin’s lipid reserves and support its natural defence against dehydration and environmental aggressors.
It’s particularly interesting for skin that feels dry, tight, or sensitised. The serum has been clinically evaluated on dry and sensitised skin, including assessment of trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), an important measure of how effectively the skin barrier is retaining moisture. It has also been evaluated for improvements in visible redness and sensations of tightness and itching.
The vegan formula is made in France with 99% natural-origin ingredients.
One important thing to remember is where it goes in your routine. Because Serum Omega is a richer, oil-based product, use it last, over your lighter water-based serums and moisturiser. Think of it as the final comforting layer that helps seal everything in.
It can also form part of a three-step autumn ritual of exfoliating, hydrating, and repairing, worked into your routine throughout September and October to help prepare skin before temperatures really begin to drop.
Don’t forget the body
Autumn is also when many of us return to more structured exercise – whether that’s the gym, running, walking, or simply getting our steps back up.
Revive Active Joint Complex is a daily super supplement formulated to support joints, cartilage, bones, connective tissue, and normal muscle function. Its ingredients include marine collagen, glucosamine, MSM, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C, D3 and K2.
And that’s really my autumn philosophy: repair rather than reinvent. Cleanse properly, replenish the barrier, moisturise, keep wearing your SPF, move your body and look at your nutrition too. Your skin doesn’t need to be punished for having enjoyed the summer.
Forget 'new season', new me. I’m much more interested in 'new season, look after the me I already have'.
