Every cloud has a silver lining

Sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns like The Silver Loom who have used this time to launch their new design studio with a collection of contemporary jewellery.

I’m a complete magpie with a penchant for jewellery - truth be told, I can never understand people that don’t wear it as I think the right piece of jewellery can completely change up the look of an outfit.

I’m always really interested in seeing what kind of jewellery a person is wearing as I believe it says a lot about a person and I would say The Silver Loom pieces are perfect for a person who likes clean lines with a contemporary and timeless feel to their look.

The Silver Loom was launched this year by Izabella Balikoti and Andrew O’Ciardubháin, two designers with backgrounds in fashion design, furniture design and architecture respectively. Combining these two voices and a variety of experiences creates a dynamic language with which they explore the possibilities of form and shadow in contemporary jewellery.

A mutual creative vision for emotive lines that flow between the pieces and the wearer drive each sculptural silver series. Based in Ireland, the brand takes inspiration from the rich and beautiful scenery while weaving in threads from a global contemporary aesthetic to the landscape of Irish jewellery design.

It’s easy to see the influences of both the art and design world when you look at the collection, and as a studio, they are keen to develop ways to push materials and to innovate. A desire to explore contemporary possibilities drives them to create collections for a design conscious customer: women who are looking for statement, minimal jewellery with a timeless aesthetic to wear and cherish for years to come.

Sterling silver is draped like velvet creating crevices of shadow on the highly polished surface of the Pina neckpiece, while displaying close attention to detail in the gentle curl of the line that forms the silhouette. The neckpiece takes its name from renowned dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch.

Each piece is made with the wearer in mind, the forms draping from or curling around the body creating an elegant discourse between the line of the body and the form of the silver. Although they can be seen as statement pieces, their soft shadows create a subdued elegance.

The Silver Loom is launching two series simultaneously to establish the brand’s signature and design direction. Each series is an exploration of shadow and line through a variety of fluid, draped and sculptural forms. The Silver Loom is launching the brand online as well as on Instagram and Facebook.

Although having an online global presence has been relevant for years, now in light of recent events and considerations of the ‘new normal’ the brand will initially be launching and trading digitally.

I think it speaks volumes of this brand’s character that they have used this time of quarantine to push their vision forward and to launch an incredibly beautiful and stylish new jewellery label. Definitely ones to watch!
