Africa Day falls on May 25 each year with the aim of celebrating African diversity and success, and to highlight the cultural and economic potential that exists on the continent of Africa. Feile Africa has been celebrating Africa Day in Cork City since 2003; this year's event will be it's seventh in succession. Cork City's Festival of Africa is among the 35 events taking place around the country this year to celebrate Africa Day. The events planned by Feile Africa, under the title of 'Festival of Africa', will take place over three days from Friday, May 22 Sunday, May 24 and will comprise of a number of varied events of the musical, dance, art and literature variety. The Festival opens on Friday, May 22 at the Cork City Library with Unity Drums. Students from Cork City Schools demonstrating their West Africa Drumming Skills. A series of music and dance workshops will take place over the three days at the CIT School of Music, The Pavilion and Crane Lane Theatre. On Saturday, May 23, the 'Africa Unplugged' acoustic sessions take place at Sin E (Coburg Street), while 'A hot night in Kinshasa', with Motema, provides an evening of Congolese music and dance at the Crane Lane Theatre. On Sunday, May 24 a night of cabaret from the African Diaspora with musicians, storytellers, acrobats, jugglers and performers from Brazil, Cuba, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Congo is happening at the Pavilion. The same venue is also hosting a film, Dambe, by the Mali project. That same evening 'A hot night in Lagos', with Oleku Band, offers an evening of Nigerian music and dance at the Crane Lane Theatre. A Garden Party with the New Communities Partnership and free African food, acoustic music, African Gospel Choir, cultural displays and dances takes place at the Franciscan Well. An Afro-Jazz Jam and party with Niwel Tsumbu's at the Pavilion will bring the festivities to a close. What's more, all these events will be open to all members of the public and are free of charge. |
