So what kind of improvisation does Mike primarily lean towards? Are we talking non-idiomatic free improv with no pre-planning undertaken by the musician/musicians, or rather a form of 'structured' improvisation - music that is designed to sound chaotic but equally music where everyone knows where they are to a degree? And does he have a particular preference himself? "I don't think my improvisation style has a name though any suggestions will be appreciated! It don't really pre-plan though it does depend on the situation, for example when playing in a noisy bar I would tend to be louder to compensate. The only preference I have is to enjoy myself and I find that audiences prefer to watch someone having a good time." With a substantial role in the 25-strong Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra, as well as his figurehead position in the Fizzle series in his native UK, Mike is well versed in dealing with collaborative spontaneous creation, a process he likens to verbal conversation. Understanding personal differences is key he says, to a successful collaborative improvisation, particularly as the process requires collective decision making and a trust in one another's abilities. "I think that free improvisation is comparable to a verbal conversation – wherever you're from and whatever language you speak, you wouldn't talk over someone mid-sentence without good reason, you wouldn't wildly change the subject for no reason. You would probably not mention certain things that you feel the other person would be offended by. If you don't feel as though you can be yourself with another person you choose not to see them that often, it doesn't mean that the other person is wrong." Mike Hurley performs tonight (Thursday, July 10), at the Ó Riada Hall, UCC Department of Music, Sundays Well. All are welcome (to do as the please).
