The Douglas Library has moved back into the newly developed Village Shopping Centre. The new premises are double the size of the old site and are based on the first floor of the new development. It will retain its existing opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5.30pm with two late nights on Thursday and Friday until 8pm.

 
Schools not consulted over library closure

Schools in the Blackpool and Shandon area were not consulted by Cork City Council prior to a decision to close the existing St Mary's Road library and relocate the facility to Blackpool Retail Park, it emerged at this week's City Council meeting. Councillors voted by a margin of 16 to 10 to postpone the planned closure of the library pending a proper consultation with local schools and the wider community.

O'Keeffe stumped over schools closures

Education Minister, Batt O'Keeffe is taking flak from Fine Gael's Education Spokesman, Brian Hayes following a parliamentary question which revealed the Cork minister did not know how many schools had to be closed to facilitate the recent local and European elections. According to Deputy Hayes, "It is crazy that the Minister responsible for schools doesn't know how many schools were closed for the elections.

 
Progress on Ballygarvan school discussions

Discussions about the future of Ballygarvan National School have progressed very positively and it now appears that the school will be able to continue to cater to the needs of children in the area into the coming years. Just last month the Principle of the school was forced to tell local parents that there are no school places for their children next September in the same month that 140 residential units was granted planning permission in the same small village

 
13,150 Cork pupils in classes with 30 plus students

Figurs highlighted this week have revealed that 13,150 pupils in Cork are currently in classes with more than 30 students. These figures were revealed to Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer on foot of a recent parliamentary question and paint a startling picture of the shape of Irish classrooms prior to the proposed cuts in Budget 2009.

 
Cork school forced to turn away children

A CORK school has been forced to inform parents that their children will have no place in the local school next year. Parents living in the Ballygarvan area have been informed that the local Ballygarvan National School is currently at capacity and will be unable to accept all pupils next September as a result.
