Christy Moore strums the house down

By Carmel Tobin

Fans who went to see Christy Moore at Live at the Marquee Cork on Saturday night definitely weren’t disappointed!

People gathered around the grounds chatting and having fun, from all age groups, on the way down there. We parked in the car park provided at a charge of €5, which was very convenient.

We then walked into the grounds and a great vibe greeted us, music playing in the background and all the different smells from the food stalls wafted around.

As it approached 8pm, we made our way to our seats. We were seated about five rows back from the stage and in the middle, which assured us of a perfect view of Christy.

He walked onto the stage to a huge greeting and with him were Declan Sinnott, Vickie Keating, Jim Higgins and Cathal Hayden - his orchestra as he put it on the night. The minute he strummed his guitar, the crowd were behind him and he was relaxed and ready for a fantastic night.

His first song was ‘The City of Chicago’ and he went from strength to strength, belting out all of his best songs, from ‘Black is the Colour’ to ‘Joxer Goes to Stuttgart’ and ‘Don’t Forget Your Shovel’. He went on to welcome members of the NYPD, who were in the audience and sang ‘Fairytale of New York’ for them.

Next was an introduction to John Spillane, who stood up and acknowledged the crowd to a huge applause as Christy sang a song he had written, ‘The Ballad of Patrick Murphy’.

And all too soon, the show came to a close, or so we thought, but when Christy and crew walked off the stage, the crowd erupted into a blast of ‘Ole, Ole, Ole’ and dutifully Christy and band returned and sang three more songs to send everybody home very happy.

Well done Christy and long may you continue!
