Weather effects climate workshop

A workshop on climate change was described as productive and encouraging by its organiser.

Green Party Councillor Lorna Bogue hosted the workshop on Tuesday to help members of the public in making a submission to Cork City Council’s draft Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.

Speaking with the Cork Independent on Wednesday, she said: “Loads of good ideas came out of the meeting which is encouraging. It was a productive meeting. Six or seven people were at it which was good for the night that was in it given how bad the weather was. There was also an Extinction Rebellion meeting on which my party colleague Oliver Moran was at and that would had an effect on numbers too. They just happened to clash with one another.

“The meeting was also a chance to show people and encourage them to make their own submissions,” she added.

She said that the ideas will now be reviewed by her and her Green Party colleagues in Cork before the party makes its own submission to the Strategy.

Cllr Bogue said: “The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy will be in place for the next five years and will guide how we, as a council, will adapt to the changes that will come as a result of climate change. Climate change is already impacting operations in Cork City Council, and as there is very little being done on a national level it is up to us at a local level to make the adaptations necessary.”

She stressed how important it is for members of the public to contribute to plans like the Council’s climate strategy.

The Adaptation Strategy draft may be viewed at all council libraries and in City Hall during normal business hours. It may also be accessed online at gov.ie/en/consultations.

Submissions may be made via email to climateaction@corkcity.ie, or by going to consult.corkcity.ie, before 5pm on 13 September, or by posting a letter to Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, Strategic & Economic Development, Cork City Council, City Hall, Cork, T12 T997.
