A Culture Night to remember

Cork will be alive with the sound of music, theatre, poetry, fireworks and much more as thousands of people prepare to descend on the city this Friday.

Preparations are continuing this week as Culture Night 2019 gears up to take over more than 100 venues across Cork city.

This year’s event will take place on Friday 20 September. As always, younger culture vultures will be well catered for before the night owls hit the town, with storytelling, face painting, creative workshops and puppet shows on offer throughout the day.

With much to be explored across the city, and with new city bounds such as Ballincollig and Glanmire, Bus Éireann are providing free Culture Buses during peak activity time. The dedicated bus service will also feature live music while in transit and will begin at 7pm on the night and run until 10pm. Buses will leave approximately every 20 minutes from the three Culture Stops at City Hall. The stops include the Orange Route, which runs from City Hall, Eglinton Street to Blackrock Castle; the Pink Route, which runs from City Hall, Terence Mac Swiney Quay to Collins Barracks and the Green Route, which runs from City Hall, Anglesea Street to Wilton.

Some of the key highlights of this year’s culture night include Around the World in 80 Games at Cork City Hall. There, guests will be invited to enjoy a variety of inter-generational and intercultural experiences as they engage in physical play, card games, board games and street games.

The night also sees Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral host the Choral Evensong from 6.15pm, followed by a performance by the Cathedral Choir at 7.45pm. Guided tours will be on at hourly intervals from 7-9pm.

Pitch'd Circus Arts Festival will take over the Coal Quay and North Main Street, with street performances and a teenage circus club at Skiddy's Plaza, followed by an explosive firework display to wrap up a night of entertainment.
