Wrap up in style
Can we just take a moment to discuss an item of clothing that has really come into its own this season and that is the coat.
Now more than ever we are relying on our outerwear to make our sartorial decisions super stylish. It’s easy to see why when our coats and winter accessories are the only thing people outside of our homes get to see us in at the moment, so here are some of this season’s biggest outerwear trends.
Whether it’s on the school run or doing the weekly shop, you want to don your absolute best coat in order to make it seem like we are all attempting to still make an effort at dressing ourselves. When it comes to styles that are popular, there’s no denying that the classic puffer, the new kid on the block the ‘shacket’, and the slightly more dressy faux fur all feature heavily in our wardrobes this season.
Fashion has never been more casual and the puffer coat is one of the most popular styles this season. Keep your tones neutral to get the most out of this coat which is seriously practical and has been seen on everyone from Meghan Markle to Kylie Jenner which speaks in itself of the versatility of this coat. It’s perfect over loungewear but also gives a heritage feel when worn with midi dresses and this season’s favourite, the chunky boot.
If you favour a longer length puffer but are petite in height, then a belt works perfectly to give yourself a neater silhouette. Accessories are key to jazzing this style up so go for colourful cross body bags and wear cosy bobble hats to add texture and colour.
A shacket is probably the newest trend for coats out there at the moment and again they are super popular with everyone. A great layering piece, the lighter versions can be worn under coats or over another layer like a leather jacket to create warm and stylish looks. Often seen in check prints, let the shacket do the talking and wear with neutral colour blocks underneath. Check prints come around year after year so there’s no doubt that the shacket is around for more than one season.
One of my personal favourites in outerwear is a faux fur and while it’s traditionally a dressier coat, there are ways to make it more wearable for day to day. Look no further than Kate Moss who is the queen of high low dressing for tips on how to work the faux fur into your everyday look.
To avoid the faux fur from looking too bulky, keep the rest of your outfit more streamlined.
A simple fitted roll neck, skinny jeans and a pair of killer boots is outfit perfection.
While I’ll always suggest a neutral colour in a coat, the faux fur offers a chance to get creative and at the moment there are lots of different styles out there in leopard print (a neutral in my eyes) as well as rich tones of rust, khaki green and burgundy. So have some fun with this and pick a fun shade in a colour that suits your own colouring.
