Time for tee in Monkstown

By Geraldine Fitzgerald

It’s time to tee off for a great cause.

The inaugural Cork Spina Bifide and Hydrocephalus Golf Classic will take place in Monkstown Golf Club on Friday 18 June.

Organiser Alan Fleury, Committee member of Cork Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association, is looking forward to finally seeing his original fundraising idea take place, having twice been cancelled over the past year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

There is tremendous goodwill to support the initiative, with primary sponsorship provided by Port of Cork.

All tees and greens have also been sponsored, and generous financial support provided by Horizon Energy Group, Bon Secours Hospital, O’Leary Insurances, Transpoco and Sandy Rimmington and Commodore of Monkstown Bay Sailing Club.

The Association was setup in Cork by Alan’s father, Charles Edward, and his committee to support those with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in 1970.

A completely voluntary organisation, the Association looks after members financially, helping towards costs such as trips to hospitals, adaptions to homes, equipment to attend college and school, a contribution towards respite and a wide variety of other needs.

Charles passed away recently, and his family are pleased to donate a Perpetual Trophy to the winning team in his memory.

Alan manages his own Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus with great positivity and has a full, busy life. He currently manages the Monkstown Bay Sailing Club premises and is a past Commodore himself.

A spokesperson for the main sponsors, Port of Cork, said: ‘We would like to congratulate Alan and his fellow Cork Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association committee members, on organising a great event for a very worthy cause. The Port are proud to support this charitable event and wish all those taking part an excellent day out in Monkstown Golf Club.’

Alan and a few of his good friends as supporting organisers are looking forward to a great day’s golfing and the raising of much needed funds for the Association. The cost per team of three is €300 which includes golf, some wonderful prizes, and a dinner from the famed kitchen of Monkstown Golf Club.
