A number of smart bins have been installed around the city to tackle litter.

Cork has never bin smarter

A fleet of solar-powered smart bins have been installed across the city in the latest Leeside effort in the war against litter.

The installation of the PEL BriteBin Solar compacting bins was overseen by Cork City Council as footfall and subsequent litter continues to rise in the city.

The new high-tech bins have a significantly higher waste capacity than that of standard street bins and are completely sealed, preventing birds and other wildlife from accessing the contents.

The BriteBin range is manufactured by Irish owned company PEL in Ballindine in Mayo who recently won an innovation award for the bin’s design. Each bin is equipped with a bin-fill level sensor which, once full, will send an alert to Cork City Council who will then deploy resources to empty the bin.

This will mean that only bins requiring emptying will be serviced, thus saving on time and costly resources. Meanwhile, PEL has announced that it has partnered up with TidyTowns Ireland this year and is sponsoring the prize of four PEL BriteBins to the winning town of their Agent Brite Litter Awareness Award.

Tommy Griffith, Founder and CEO of PEL said: “This is a great opportunity for towns nationwide to reduce litter in their communities which will enhance the local environment and encourage biodiversity.”
