Do POP in and volunteer

If you love design, food and events in roughly equal measure and are eager to gain experience in all three, then why not volunteer for Design POP, one of Cork’s most exciting yearly festivals?

Taking place across Cork city both on the ground and online, Design POP is about to undertake its biggest programme to date and will require “people power” for positions including event stewards and production assistants.

Every year, volunteers form a vital part of the festival team while having the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and gain invaluable festival experience.

The intention of Design POP has always been to celebrate Ireland’s incredible talent in architecture, design, food and drink and this year, organisers say it’s more important than ever to celebrate these things.

The festival has already announced seven architect, designer and food collaborations working on seven different outdoor pavilions situated in different locations around Cork city. These are Mark Horgan and River Club Bar at The River Lee Hotel, Play Nice studio and Currabinny at Wandesford Quay, Cook Architects and Ballymaloe Foods at Elizabeth Fort, Alan Macilwraith of JCA Architects and Good Day Deli at Nano Nagle Place, Maser and Crawford Gallery Café at Emmett Place, Wilson Architects and Naturally Nourished at Penrose Dock, and CCAE and Blackrock Castle Observatory at Blackrock Castle.

Design POP will also host over 15 events at its outdoor festival HQ at the courtyard at Backwater Studio on Wandesford Quay.

The festival opens on 27 August with talks by artist Kari Cahill, collaborative art duo The Project Twins, and Director of The Lewis Glucksman Gallery Fiona Kearney.

Exhibitions will include Design POP’s annual ‘Milking Stool’ at Nano Nagle Place celebrating the diverse talent of furniture designers throughout Ireland. This unique exhibition challenges each designer to embody their design style through the medium of the humble milking stool.

All furniture pieces will be sold through the Design POP website, allowing members of the public and visitors to the exhibition to purchase a stool over the duration of the festival.

The Royal Institute of Architects Ireland (RIAI), along with Cork City Council will also present an exhibition, showcasing some of the architecture competition entries for the Bishop Lucey Park redesign.

The exhibition will include a panel discussion between Cork city architect Tony Duggan, Director of Architecture and Communications at the RIAI Sandra O’Connell, and the winners of the competition, Hall McKnight Architects.

The closing event, ‘Behind the Pavilions’ will take place on 29 August in the form of an open discussion with all architects, designers and food producers who took part in the festival.

The 2021 Design POP will run from 27-29 august with full details of the festival available at designpop.ie.

Tickets are now on sale for all events and early booking is advised due to limited capacity allowing for social distancing.
