First phase of Marina Park opening delayed

The delay in opening the first phase of the new Marina Park is a slight one and not a major one, a city council meeting heard this week.

Independent Cllr Kieran McCarthy asked city officials for an update on opening the new park located beside Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

David Joyce, Director of Services Roads and Environment Operations Directorate, told Cllr McCarthy that the opening of Marina Park Phase 1 is scheduled for mid to late November. “If issues arise during completion of the remaining works, council will be advised of this,” he added.

However, Cllr McCarthy stated that a previous question he submitted about the park said it would be opened this month and asked Mr Joyce what happened for there to be a delay.

Mr Joyce said: “A date of late September was given at the start of the summer. Since then we have had weather issues and we have had Covid-19 issues. There isn’t any major problems. It is just like any major construction project of this size – getting everything to work together has resulted in a slight delay. We are only taking a matter of weeks. It’s not a significant delay, it’s not a matter of months.”
