3 is the magic number

Do you drink less or more than the average coffee drinker in Ireland? Well new data has revealed that Irish adults drink an average of three cups of coffee per day.

The annual Bewley’s Coffee Consumption Report, which looks at Ireland’s coffee consumption habits also found that 78% of adults drink coffee every day, up 4% from last year.

The report was carried out to mark International Coffee Day on 1 October and the latest findings examined the changes in coffee consumption habits and attitudes.

When it comes to preparing coffee at home, instant coffee hits the spot for the majority of coffee drinkers (55%) while using a coffee machine (48%) and French press (24%) are also popular.

Younger coffee drinkers (18-24) enjoy coffee for more than just the taste with two-thirds (66%) saying it makes them feel grown-up and sophisticated. However, their coffee must look the part with nearly half (49%) of this cohort claiming they need their coffee to look good so they can share it on social media with 68% even saying social media influences the coffee they drink.

72% say that that taste is the main factor when choosing their favourite coffee.

The americano was voted Ireland’s favourite coffee for the third year running as 41% of respondents prefer it as their choice of brew, with cappuccinos and lattes following in popularity, 40%, and 34% respectively.

Meanwhile different data has revealed that flat whites are Ireland’s favourite coffee! LoyLap, an Irish company specialising in digital payments and customer engagement software for businesses looked at a quarter of a million of payments transactions to find their winner.

Their financial data found that cappuccino is a close second, with latte and americano rounding off the list. The payments data was analysed across 250,000 transactions between 1 January-20 September 2021. So, who to believe?
