Travel grants confirmed
Travel investment grants of more than €20 million have been confirmed for Cork county for 2022.
The grants will see numerous projects undertaken throughout the county to improve road infrastructure and safety for users.
A total of 32 grants will be allocated in the county with projects like the Dunkettle Interchange and the Safe to Schools Programme receiving major funding. The Dunkettle – Carrigtwohill - Phase 3 - Dunkettle to Fitzpatricks project is set to receive the largest amount of funding with an allocation of €2,510,000.
The next biggest allocation of €1,316,000 will go to the The Bantry - Active Travel Towns and Villages project, with €95,000 and €1,050,000 set for phase 1 and phase 2 of the Dunkettle – Carrigtwohill project respectively.
Phase 4 of the Dunkettle – Carrigtwohill project, Railway Crossing to Carrigtwohill Station, will receive a grant of €600,000.
Other projects set to receive grants include the Ballinacurra - Middleton Pedestrian and Cycle Route with a grant of €1,150,000, and the Mallow - Active Travel Towns and Villages with €1,471,000.
The funding was discussed during a Cork County Council on Monday. Fianna Fáil Cllr Ian Doyle said: “This is a great initiative. Much of these projects are actually in work at present or completed and are making a huge difference.”
Green Party Cllr Alan O’Connor added: “To quote the writer Lewis Mumford, no city can solve its transportation problems if it neglects the greatest self-propelling vehicle of all, which is the pedestrian. To that, you might add the most efficient mechanical aid, which is the bicycle.”
