Gardaí in county Cork have charged a man in connection with the murder of Shane Murphy in Carrigaline.

Man charged with Carrigaline murder

A man in his 40s has been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 27 year old man in Carrigaline over the weekend.

The victim, named as Shane Murphy, was killed at his family home on Saturday. His father Patrick, 75, suffered serious stab wounds during the attack and is being treated in hospital.

A 42 year old man was arrested and detained by gardaí after the assault. He has since been charged with the murder and will appear before Cork District Court this morning.

Mr Murphy was well-known in the pitch & putt community across the country and had won numerous local, regional and national titles. He was ranked in the top ten players in the country. His father, known locally as Weeshie, is also highly respected in the sport.

A statement from Pitch & Putt Ireland read: “Pitch & Putt Ireland is both horrified and saddened to learn of the tragedy involving the Murphy family in Carrigaline. The death of Shane and the serious injuries which Weeshie has suffered have immensely shocked us. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family as well as the Raffeen Creek and Rocklodge clubs. We will be making no further comment at this time.”

Gardaí are continuing investigations into the murder and are appealing to any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

A garda statement read: “Gardaí investigating the fatal stabbing and serious assault that occurred at a house in Carrigaline, Co. Cork on Saturday 26 March, 2022 have charged the arrested man.”

The 42 year old man who was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 has been charged and is due to appear in custody at Cork District Court this morning.

Gardaí also said that investigations are ongoing.
