Death of Shane Murphy has ‘immensely shocked us’

The man, John Murphy, is also charged with the attempted murder of his 75 year old father, John ‘Weeshie’ Murphy.

A well-known figure in Irish pitch & putt and ranked in the top ten players in the country, Shane Murphy died from multiple stab wounds in his family home on Saturday evening. His father Weeshie, who is also a highly regarded pitch & putt player, suffered serious stab wounds and was taken to hospital.

Shane Murphy died of his wounds before he could be transferred to CUH despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene.

John Murphy was arrested and detained by gardaí following the attack before being charged with his brother’s murder. He has been remanded in custody after a court appearnace on Monday.

Following the attack, Pitch & Putt Ireland released a statement describing how “horrified and saddened” the pitch & putt community was to hear of the tragic events.

“The death of Shane and the serious injuries which Weeshie has suffered have immensely shocked us. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family as well as the Raffeen Creek and Rocklodge clubs,” the statement read.

A notice on Rip.ie paid tribute to Shane: “Beloved son of Weeshie and the late Marie, dear brother of the late Mark. Sadly missed by his loving family, relatives and friends.”

Funeral arrangement are expected to be made in the coming days.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the murder and are appealing to any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
