Massive drugs seizure in county

Gardaí in Cork county have arrested a man and a woman and seized drugs worth an estimated €400,000 after searching a vehicle yesterday evening.

Gardaí stopped the vehicle at around 7.30pm yesterday, Monday, in the Carrigtwohill area and, following a search, discovered 20kg of suspected cannabis. The seized drugs have been sent for further analysis.

The man and woman, both in their 30s, were arrested on the spot and are being held at Cobh Garda Station for questioning.

The arrests and seizure were made by gardaí attached to the Midleton District Crime Unit and Midleton Drugs Unit as part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy designed to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels.

A garda spokesperson said: “As part of Operation Tara, Gardaí attached to the Midleton District Crime Unit and Midleton Drugs Unit seized drugs worth €400,000 and arrested two persons following a search in Cork on Monday 9 May 2022.

“A woman and a man, both aged in their 30s, were arrested at the scene. They are currently detained at Cobh Garda Station under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act 1996. Investigations ongoing.”
