Sunscreens are getting smarter

Let's face it sunscreen is not sexy, but it is the biggest defence against dark spots, wrinkles and skin cancer.

Therefore, it is essential we use it every single day. I always say a morning routine should just involve a vitamin C antioxidant and a skin appropriate SPF. For me this is always a hydrating one.

We have come a long way since chalky hard to

blend formulas. Sunscreens are getting smarter and more effective and in this piece, I have chosen three of the best.

The reinvented icon

The new La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ (€19.50) is a revolutionary new form of sun protection including a new filter, specifically designed to protect skin from the rays most associated with the signs of premature ageing.

La Roche-Posay’s newest filter, (Mexoryl 400) has been ten years in the making and is the most efficient UV filter against the most penetrative rays and the first to make protection from these rays a priority.

In combination with La Roche-Posay’s existing filters, it provides their most complete broad spectrum sun protection available and unprecedented protection against the rays that can cause the visible signs of premature ageing.

Rather than flooding the market with multiple new products, La Roche Posay is committed to sustainable innovation, refining and improving the existing product portfolio. As such Anthelios UVMune400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ will replace Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF50+. But fans of the original shouldn’t panic. The new formulation retains the same non-greasy, non-sticky feel with an invisible texture. It wears well under make up too.

The blue light fighter

Avène’s new facial sun care range has been formulated following strict standards for the planet and for every skin type. Therefore, the new formulas contain minimal ingredients and packaging is made of recycled and recyclable plastic. Avène’s new sun range also offers powerful hydration and nourishment in five different formulas targeted at different skin types and needs.

Easy to apply and quick to absorb, the innovative formulas offer an invisible finish and no white cast on the skin, making it perfect for daily use alone or under make-up.

The hydrating hybrid

Glow Recipe has just introduced the newest innovation joining the Watermelon family with the Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Sunscreen SPF50 (€36). This is Glow Recipe’s first sun protection and it applies on sheer for a quick, blendable application in seconds.

Once applied, the non-greasy formula disappears into a glowing complexion. Watermelon extract hydrates, delivers essential vitamins and amino acids, and visibly brightens skin.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) visibly reduces hyperpigmentation, corrects the look of dullness, and minimises the appearance of pores. Hyaluronic acid anchors moisture within the skin, keeping it hydrated and bouncy by retaining 1,000 times its weight in water.

Aloe helps to soothe and hydrate the skin while providing antioxidant-rich protection against external environmental aggressors.

Tips

Always ensure that the formula is suitable for your skin type, be this face or body. SPF30 is a good minimum to start with and always check that the product is broad spectrum.

No sunscreen protects you from 100 per cent of the sun’s rays, so it’s important to plan your clothing, hats and other barriers carefully. If you work outside, you may need to consider a waterproof formula.

Finally, the best sunscreen is one that you will actually wear.
