The Ballymaquirk junction will be upgraded following years of traffic collisions.

Cork county blackspot to be upgraded

Improvements to one of the county’s most notorious blackspots for vehicle accidents has been given the green light by An Bord Pleanála.

The Ballymaquirk junction at the intersection of the N72 and the R579 outside Mallow has been the scene of repeated accidents in recent years.

According to a report published last year by Cork County Council, there were 17 collisions at the junction between 2014 and 2018, eight of which caused injury to at least one person. These numbers are considered well above average.

Plans to replace the junction with a roundabout have been agreed upon and construction is set to begin in September.
