‘Caring’ Gillian is laid to rest

A mother of 2 who died after a tragic accident in Cork city last week has been laid to rest.

Hundreds of mourners turned out in person and online to St Patrick's Church in Millstreet on Tuesday to pay tribute to Gillian Daly who died on Friday night after her car entered the River Lee.

Described as “sweet, caring, loving and beautiful”, Gillian, 44, is survived by her husband John, sons Evan and Luke, parents John Joe and Helen, and her 3 siblings.

Speaking at Tuesday’s requiem mass, Gillian’s brother Jason fought back tears as he remembered his sister who he said brought joy to everyone she came in contact with.

He said: “The thought of you Gillian not being with us for years and years to come is breaking all of our hearts, to know that we will never be able to hold, hug or spend cherished time together with you ever again. As a sister, we couldn't have asked for better.

“Everybody loved you. You had a heart of gold. You lived your life for your sons, always caring and worrying about them. Your gentle and warm nature lives on through them and will for ever more. Goodbye for now. Sleep well Gillian.”

Following the mass at St Patrick's Church, which is the same church she and her husband John were married in, Gillian was laid to rest at St Eltin's Cemetery in Kinsale.

A post on RIP.ie read: “Sadly missed by her heartbroken husband, children, parents, sister Caroline, brothers Jason and John, parents-in-law Martin and Eileen, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunt, nephews, nieces, neighbours, relatives and her many friends, especially Nuala.”

Gillian, who lived in Douglas, died on Friday night when her car entered the River Lee from Kennedy Quay shortly before 9pm.

Her 2 sons were also in the car but managed to escape and were later pulled from the water by emergency crews.

They were taken to CUH where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Gillian’s body was later removed by a dive team from the Irish Naval Service and taken to CUH for a post-mortem examination.
