Sunken fishing trawler removed

The wreck of a fishing trawler which sank at a pier in West Cork last month has been successfully removed.

Cork County Council confirmed the removal of the 23 metre MV Sceptre from the busy fishing port of Union Hall on Friday 1 July.

The trawler sank in shallow waters just off Keelbeg Pier in Union Hall last month.

The wreck was lifted onto a specialised crane barge and transported to an overseas licensed facility to be disposed of in line with environmental requirements.

Following the initial sinking, Cork County Council immediately deployed oil containment booms around the wreck to prevent pollution.
