Colm wins June sports award

Colm Lyons was the latest recipient of the 96FM/C103 Sports Star of the Month award in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel to acknowledge his appointment as referee for the All-Ireland Hurling Final.

The presentation lunch took place a few days after the final, in which Colm performed with distinction and made a fabulous contribution to a wonderful occasion.

Colm said: “I was really surprised to get the call, but delighted to be honoured and my thanks to 96FM and Rochestown Park Hotel for this lovely occasion here today.” Colm thanked the many people that helped him reach the pinnacle of his career: “There are a lot of people that without whom I would not be here, and it’s great that a lot of you are here today and especially my ever reliable team of umpires without whom I could not function.”

County Board Vice-Chairman Pat Horgan said: “It’s a pleasure to be here to congratulate Colm not only on his appointment but on the brilliant job he did on the game it reflects very well on the standard of refereeing in the county and I would also like to thank you for the amount of work you are doing in the promotion of our up and coming referee’s while our thanks also to the sponsors for their continued support of Cork GAA.”

The lunch was attended by family, friends of Colm, while Ber Allen represented along with Bernard Corcoran Colm’s club Nemo Rangers, while County Board PRO Francis Kenneally was also in attendance. Present also were all the 4 other Cork referee’s who have officiated at All-Ireland Finals - Conor Lane, Michael Collins, Diarmuid Kirwan, and Frank Murphy. Along with Colm’s appointment it makes 9 finals between them.

Isabel Keane 96FM and Tom Tobin Rochestown Park Hotel congratulated Colm. Since the inception of these awards the All-Ireland Final referee has been honoured. Colm now joins the previous monthly award winners in the race for the overall award. The 2022 Banquet will take place on 3 February where GAA President Larry McCarthy will be the guest of honour.
