The real faces of Trócaire

An exhibition celebrating courage and determination is coming to Cork next week.

Trócaire's human rights and environmental protection themed photographic exhibition ‘Face of Resistance’ will be on display in Cork City Library for a month, beginning on 5 October.

The exhibition acknowledges those who are challenging the activities of corporations, which damage the environment and violate human rights.

It features portraits of activists in countries where Trócaire works, who are risking their lives to protect their communities and environment from abuse by big corporations

West Cork man, Brendan McCarthy, who was one of the people behind a campaign to stop the building of a thermoplastics factory in Skibbereen, which threatened the local environment, features in the exhibition.

Brendan said: “When you know something is not right and does not fit in with the vision for your area, you have to stand up and fight. I’m very happy to be part of this exhibition, and I’d encourage anyone around Cork to pop in to see it!” In countries where Trócaire works, indigenous communities are being forced from their land in the interests of big business. Those who try to defend their communities are often attacked and imprisoned, or even murdered. The ‘Face of Resistance’ exhibition is part of Trócaire’s campaign on business and human rights which aims to hold big business to account for human rights and environmental abuses across the globe.
