A Cork darts player has qualified for a new international tournament taking place for the first time this week.

Throw the distance

An eagle-eyed Cork darts player has qualified for a new competition featuring some of the world’s top players.

This week, Ciaran Teehan, nicknamed The High Tower, is competing against 11 other hopefuls in the inaugural MODUS Super Series in Portsmouth in the UK.

The competition runs until this Saturday with all matches being broadcast live on Sporty Stuff TV (Sky 437, Freesat 250, Freeview 264) and online at sportystuff.tv.

Ciaran has been making a name for himself recently in the darts world, qualifying for the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship, while also participating in the 2021 UK Open.

The Corkman will battle for the top prize of £20,000 against Chris Mason, Robert Owen, Chas Barstow, Graham Hall, Darryl Pilgrim, Lee Evans, Graham Usher, Conan Whitehead, Josh Payne, Gavin Carlin, and Peter Jacques.

Following the final this Saturday, match week 1 of MODUS Super Series 02 will immediately commence on 24 October, ensuring participants benefit from a non-stop cycle of high-quality tournament play all year round.

One of Ciaran’s toughest competitors this week is sure to be Welshman Robert Owen, nicknamed Stack Attack, who won a PDC Challenge Tour event this year, and reached the semi-finals of the UK Open in 2018.

Also qualified is 52 year old Chris Mason who will swap his commentator’s microphone for his darts for what will be his first live TV event in over 12 years. Mason enjoyed a successful darts career in the 1990s and 2000s, winning the English and Scottish Opens as well as the Irish Masters, while also reaching the semi-finals of the World Matchplay.

The MODUS Super Series is a successor to the Online Darts Live League. Launched in 2020, it grew from a Covid-era, play-at-home darts tournament to a made-for-TV, studio-based competition that ran for 2 years. The MODUS Super Series is open to non-PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) Tour Card holders over the age of 18, as well as to legends from the sport.

The 12 weekly winners will compete at a brand-new, purpose-built venue in Portsmouth.

Founded in 1997, MODUS is the world’s leading professional darts events and management company, representing many of the world’s top professional darts players, including Michael Van Gerwen, Jonny Clayton, Fallon Sherrock, Simon Whitlock, and Joe Cullen.

Hill beats Trump

Separately, in snooker, Cork’s Aaron Hill pulled off a major shock on Tueday night by knocking last year’s World Championship finalist and world number two Judd Trump out of the Northern Ireland Open, recording an excellent 4-1 victory in Belfast.
