10 years of rocking on Leeside!

Get ready for an evening of spectacular entertainment as a programme which has harnessed the talents of many young people celebrates 10 years.

Since its inception in 2012, Music Generation Cork City has firmly rooted itself in Cork’s musical scene, with its young performers appearing in events, parades, concerts, on television and radio, all over the city and further afield, down through the years.

Music Generation Cork City (MGCC) is a performance music education programme that works in partnership with community based musicians and music organisations to bring music education into the lives of children and young people across Cork city.

Using the community education process, programmes are being made available in the places where children live, play, and go to school, bringing opportunities for music-making into the heart of cork’s communities.

A spokesperson for MGCC said: “In busy hives of music making in schools, youth clubs, libraries, community halls and venues, many young people across Cork city began their musical journey with MGCC. The communities of Knocknaheeny, Mahon, Ballyphehane, Togher, Mayfield, Fairfield, Blackpool and Farranree have benefited greatly from the positive impacts of performing music, writing music and the personal development associated with artistic expression, all within easy reach.”

They added: “The legacy of this early, youth engagement has been a rich and bountiful one, where youngsters who picked up their first instrument in primary school, have embarked on an odyssey where music plays a central role in their teenage and adult life, with many alumni crediting MGCC for their study and career choices.

“Which is why there is much reason for celebration, since the programme has now turned ten! As part of this auspicious occasion, MGCC are hosting a wonderful evening’s entertainment on Monday 21 November in Cork’s beloved Everyman Theatre.”

Central to this event, will be the specially commissioned, commemorative film, captured by up-and-coming talent Seán Downey, Instagram @SwanIGuess.

This film aims to give a snapshot into the everyday life of MGCC, the places the music is made, the characters who make it come together and the long-reaching, positive impact that has in these localities.

Also featured on the night will be a selection of musical performances, along with the grand unveiling of a brand new, original song, specially composed for the occasion.

Hosted by Evelyn Grant, with a few special guests thrown in also, MGCC’s 10 year birthday celebration promises to be a truly memorable one.
